It's 1350 steps to climb “The Ladder of Kotor”, and to reach the top of San Giovanni, the ruined castle built overlooking the Bay of Kotor.
It's an impressive site, looking up, from Kotor Town itself.
It's even more romantic, if you look at the castle walls at night from the other side of the Bay.
Tamara swears it looks like a Roaring Lion.
This visit to Montenegro has seen me climb San Giovanni for the third time. On this climb I was joined by my brother, Trevor, who came to visit us.
I think he enjoyed the exercise and exercise it it is.
You will work up a sweat, regardless of time of day or time of year.
But the views from atop of Kotor are both spectacular and breathtaking.
It's well worth the effort.
My top tip?
Start as early as you can. I like to climb at 0600. Not many people, it's cooler AND a better time of day for videography and photography.

If you have climbed (hiked) to the top of San Giovanni, it would be great to touch base in the comments below.
